while this system is seemingly all neat and tidy, there is certainly some macaroni afoot in terms of etymology. fardingdeale comes from the old english word for fourth. obolate comes from the greek word for a small greek coin. denariate comes from the latin word for the latin penny. solidate and librate come from latin words for large latin coins. librate also gives us a sneak peak at why pound is written lb. and £—the abbreviations refer to the latin word rather than the english one.
